Lioness Club of Shoalhaven Donates to CareSouth

The Lioness Club of Shoalhaven recently donated $1500 to CareSouth, a local not-for-profit community organisation and registered charity.

The donation will go towards buying a hoist for Nan Bishop House, one of CareSouth’s disability residences providing clients with 24-hour care. The hoist will help CareSouth staff lift disability clients in and out of beds, wheelchairs, standing frames, commodes and other mobility aids with minimum effort.

“We like to support local charities and recently became aware that CareSouth needed community support. We know this hoist will be valued and appreciated by both the residents at Nan Bishop House and their carers. It gives us great pleasure to improve lives in our local community,” said Delma Elliott, President of the Lioness Club of Shoalhaven.

Each March, the Lioness Club of Shoalhaven holds the Lioness Quilt & Craft Show, at St Michael’s School Hall in Nowra, to raise funds for local charity organisations. “It is thanks to the good attendance that makes our Quilt Show so successful, which then enables us to make such a donation not only to CareSouth but to other local charities,” said Mrs Elliott.

CareSouth is a community non-profit organisation, providing support to families, children, and young people. The organisation runs a range of services for people with disabilities, including support for the families of children with disabilities, overseeing the foster and kinship care of children with disabilities, and residential care for some people with disabilities where they cannot remain in their families. CareSouth has four such homes around Nowra, including Nan Bishop House.

“There are six people living at Nan Bishop House, two of which have significant physical disabilities, which means they are reliant on physical aids for mobility,” said David Shepherd, acting operations manager of Disability Services at CareSouth.

“We greatly appreciate the donation provided by the Lionesses to purchase a much needed hoist for the Nan Bishop House,” said Mr Shepherd. “It will be very helpful in maintaining comfort and dignity for the residents.”

“While CareSouth has government funding for some of its programs, these only include base costs, not funding for special items like the hoist the Lionesses are funding,” said Leonie Exel, Manager – Partnerships. ““These are the kinds of ‘extras’ that CareSouth needs help with,” she said.

“We also need help with ongoing costs of our Aunties and Uncles Program, which matches community volunteer mentors with children from vulnerable families,” said Ms Exel.
